Dreaming Of: My Baby Brother's Nursery

Today's post is special because it's for my littlest brother who is due in November. I am trying to woo my dad's wife into letting me help design the nursery but so far I don't think she's having it! I understand it's all part of having a baby...decorating, dressing it, yada yada. But if nothing else, I am going to get a blog post out of this situation, so here goes....

A small detail I should mention is that they live in Peru so I don't know how it would actually work out even if they did let me spec the room. I would love to use an old vintage crib and some cool flea market find that I could transform into a changing table, but I'm not privy to navigating Peruvian flea markets, so I'll stick to normal retail products. But I'm still excited about this post because for once I actually have a real client in mind instead of Paul Newman or Andy Warhol who I (sadly) never met. What's more is that I have an actual, existing space to design around. The room is huge with wood floors, a very extravagant bathroom (especially for a baby), a walk in closet and an attached playroom. The benefit of all that is that the room itself doesn't need a lot of furniture for storage, which is great since there isn't a lot of wall space that won't be taken up by doors, windows or the crib. The other challenge is that my style and my dad/stepmom's style are pretty different, and we haven't spoken at all about what they want for the room. I don't really know what Peruvian people usually do with nursery themes. They can't have the cowboy theme cause I called dibs and I don't think they would want it anyway. But....sailboats, monkeys and anything else I could name off the top of my head didn't seem right for them. So, I thought about what my dad and Martha love to do; something special they would want to share with their son. And the only obvious answer seemed to be traveling. Plus, they met through her job at American Airlines. So...we have a theme, people!
AIRPLANES!
(Knowing me, you should take this to mean VINTAGE airplanes, specifically).

My vision is that the room be rather sophisticated so that it doesn't have to be redone every couple years (though that would be fun). The space should be simple and uncluttered, the furniture both functional and beautiful, and the colors masculine yet playful. This way, the room will fit nicely with the rest of the house. The large fur rug will bring coziness and comfort to a space otherwise covered in wood. The bedding won't be the typical cartoony design of most baby linens, but something like the darker and more simple design of the image in the bottom corner. The (adorable) mobile will hang over the chair (I like the white one but Martha may prefer the green one). Art will be arranged in a gallery wall over the crib where various frames will hold mementos and photographs of the baby's beautiful and adoring sister. In one corner, a vintage propeller will hang over a stack of vintage suitcases used to hold blankets and toys. And I can't resist a chandelier in a nursery, so the Sputnik will hang in the center to awe the baby and provide dim lighting perfect for lulling him to sleep. Finally, along one wall I would do something like what's in the image below, just for fun.

Well, that's all I have to say. Hope you liked it (Dad & Martha, I'm talking to you!).

Chicago Living: Balconies

Dare I say....I think summer in Chicago has finally arrived! We haven't had this many consecutive days of warm weather since I've been living here, and it's beautiful! Feels almost like home :) The lake is bright blue, the trees are bright green, the sailboats are bright white and the view from my balcony is perfect. I'm excited to start using it more often. Keeping a nice balcony is near impossible in this city before June, especially if you live on the lake like I do. The wind actually took my rug out from under my chairs and it flew down to the park below. The flower pots are finally staying put, though, and the cooler is stocked and ready to go for dinner on the balcony a few nights a week. I feel that patios and balconies are an extension of living space and should not be neglected. For those of us in rentals or with small outdoor living spaces (or both), I've gathered a few ideas to easily spruce up your outdoor space for use in the summer. Here's some inspiration.

Rugs and Flooring

World Market, $59.99

World Market, $139.99

World Market, $62.99

Flooring is an easy way to add color and texture to a balcony. Plus, I hate walking on the always-freezing-cold bare concrete. Rugs are simple and quick to add, and are made to stand up to the elements. The deck tiles from World Market are another great option. The 1'x1' tiles come in a set of 10 and fit together easily. They are eco-friendly and made of eucalyptus which is mold, mildew, fungi, termite, rot and decay resistant.

Seating and Storage

Pier 1, $269.95

Swap out those old plastic chairs for this fun seating! The Swingasan Chair hangs from a stand (sold seperately, $129.95), so you don't have to install anything. They are durable and give the illusion that you're in the tropics somewhere!

This cooler is awesome because it doesn't look tacky like normal coolers, and can even be used for seating if necessary. Similarly, storage benches are useful for storing pillows and cushions when they're not in use, saving you the hassle of dragging them inside.
Lighting

World Market, $10.49 (set of 4)
World Market, $14.99 (set of 10)

Lighting is a necessity on balconies at night. Candles are useless in windy places, and these lanterns are much cuter anyway. They are battery operated so outlets are not a concern. Pottery Barn has great options for larger, less decorative fixtures.

Accents

World Market, $22.49

World Market, $17.99

CB2, $24.99
Pier 1, $69.95

Pillows and art can add cheery elements to any space. If your balcony gets a lot of wind, you might opt for chair or bench cushions that tie on rather than pillows. The beverage tub is an attractive alternative to a cooler, and an easy way to add color. You could even line it with plastic and use it as a planter.

Flowers and Plants
Home Depot, $70
Home Depot, $30

Whiskey barrels are my absolute favorite. I have this image of 2 barrels overflowing with bougainvilleas on either side of the stairs leading up to my imaginary front door of the future. But, you know, they could also go on a balcony....These flower boxes are great for hanging over the railing. They attach with cheap hangers also sold at Home Depot. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about gardening, but apparently succulents are very low maintenance and thrive in hot weather. Another very interesing choice which I just learned about are living walls like the ones pictured below.

Also known as vertical gardens, living walls are walls which are completely or partially covered in vegetation (anyone else thinking of Wrigley Field?) I like this idea because it doesn't take up any floor space but stills allows for the outdoors to enter your balcony. Learn how to make your own vertical garden by following the link.

Dreaming Of: Converted Barns

In trying to reflect my own style in these posts, I was thinking about more things I love and always will, whether they're trendy or not. And I came up with:
BARNS!

I love barns! I love their quaint appearance from the outside and the unexpected feeling of wonder that comes over you when you stand underneath their high ceilings, taking in the smell of worn wood and dust, wondering who all has gone before you in this space. I love the endless possibilites for using the space once it has retired, so to speak. I have worked in some and partied in others. But their incredible architectural features make me melt and next on my list is to actually live in one! Apart from the beautiful wood and interesting character found in most old barns, you may have noticed that I am obsessed with beamed ceilings. Well, there are no better beamed ceilings than those found in barns. And there is so much you could do with all of the open space! These features lend themselves to more than just the rustic style typically associated with barns. I have seen barns re-done in French country, Southwestern, and even very minimalist styles. Take a look, and enjoy!

And my favorite....

Shed Architects

I simply can't get enough of the high ceilings, old wood and vast windows. And I love how the A shape of the facades makes for interesting interior spaces. I have always wanted to live in an old Queen Anne home but now I think I have a new goal. I want to find an old barn and make it my own, from top to bottom, preserving as much as possible. There would be no other home like it!

Just A Reminder...

The "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster was created by the British government at the start of World War II in 1939. It was inteded to raise public morale despite the impending threat of invasion. Though never used for its original purpose, it was rediscovered in 2000 and is now extremely popular. Many parodies have arisen, such as the one below.

I recently stumbled upon these (from Etsy shop Sad Little Crown) and loved them!

They just make you laugh. You can't stay upset after having read these. So the reminder for the day is "keep calm and carry on," or "fling yourself on the bed and sob uncontrollably," whichever you want. But then get over it and just be happy!

Trending: Coral

Some may think coral is gaudy...that it has seen its best days...that manzanita is the new coral. Blame it on my roots, but I still love coral.

(Can you see the lamps way back there?)

As you can see, coral is not just for nautical or beach themed rooms. It has its place in elegant, whimsical and even Moroccan inspired spaces (I don't know how that happened...). To add a touch of coral to your home, check out some of my favorite lamps.
